A Hand in the Darkness

Score: 7.0
Ages: 17+

This quite recent boys love visual novel is somewhat rough around the edges, but should still provide plenty of entertainment to the fans of the genre.

The game is set on a all boys boarding school in the early 1900s. The protagonist just starts the school and meets his roommates a.k.a. romantic interests. It doesn’t take long before he seems to be in danger of losing his life and his virginity.

The story is an interesting enough romantic thriller. The weight is on the romance, and I wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone who isn’t into boys love. And it’s not shounen ai either, there are several sexual encounters, and although the sexy CGs are just naughty, the written descriptions are very much explicit. On the other hand the game has no graphic, and only a little descriptive violence.

Overall the visuals are pretty inconsistent. There are plenty of cheap backgrounds that are basically just blurred photographs, and only a handful of CGs in the whole game. But it’s not bad, and I did really like some of the rare CGs.

It took me 5 – 6 hours to get all the endings, so this is definitely a short game. Which is okay, but considering some of the shortcomings, I wouldn’t pay the full 10 euros for it. Luckily there are plenty of discounts available.

I personally really enjoyed two of the three routes and thus decided to score the game a solid 7 even with all the imperfections. The developers are currently making another BL game Chasing the Stars, which seems more polished. I will be sure to get it when it comes out.
